    Cultural matter in the development of an interactive multimedia self-paced educational health program for aboriginal health workers

    Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander health workers are key providers of primary health services to Aboriginal communities especially in remote and rural areas. They are often overloaded with competing demands. There has been limited attention given to the maintenance and ongoing enhancement of their skills and knowledge following the completion of formal training. A culturally appropriated interactive multimedia self-paced health program as a mechanism to improve the accessibility and the use of scientific data and information for health purposes is proposed as a basic method for better supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander primary health care workers in their practice locations. This paper explores different approaches for the development of a culturally appropriate interactive multimedia educational health program for Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander health workers and it also explore cultural matters concerning program development in the light of existing literature

Whilst defining this for a specific scenario is influenced by the associated requirements and conditions, the process can be further guided through the establishment of the relative usefulness of alternative frameworks for composing the training and testing material. In this regard, the present paper provides an analysis of the effects, on the speaker recognition accuracy, of various bases for the formation of the training and testing data. The experimental investigations are conducted based on the use of digit utterances taken from the XM2VTS database. The paper presents a detailed description of the individual approaches considered and discusses the experimental results obtained in different cases

    A Targeted<em> in Vivo</em> SILAC Approach for Quantification of Drug Metabolism Enzymes:Regulation by the Constitutive Androstane Receptor

    The modulation of drug metabolism enzyme (DME) expression by therapeutic agents is a central mechanism of drug-drug interaction and should be assessed as early as possible in preclinical drug development. Direct measurement of DME levels is typically achieved by Western blotting, qPCR, or microarray, but these techniques have their limitations; antibody cross-reactivity among highly homologous subfamilies creates ambiguity, while discordance between mRNA and protein expression undermines observations. The aim of this study was to design a simple targeted workflow by combining in vivo SILAC and label-free proteomics approaches for quantification of DMEs in mouse liver, facilitating a rapid and comprehensive evaluation of metabolic potential at the protein level. A total of 197 peptides, representing 51 Phase I and Phase II DMEs, were quantified by LC-MS/MS using targeted high resolution single ion monitoring (tHR/SIM) with a defined mass-to-charge and retention time window for each peptide. In a constitutive androstane receptor (Car) activated mouse model, comparison of tHR/SIM-in vivo SILAC with Western blotting for analysis of the expression of cytochromes P450 was favorable, with agreement in fold-change values between methods. The tHR/SIM-in vivo SILAC approach therefore permits the robust analysis of multiple DME in a single protein sample, with clear utility for the assessment of the drug-drug interaction potential of candidate therapeutic compounds. </p

    Cell Furniture: Designs for Safety, Wellbeing, and Sustainability

    This catalogue presents the outcomes of a project aimed at creating a new line of prison furniture that not only prioritises robustness and sustainability but also strives to enhance the well-being of both prisoners and prison staff. To do this, a collaborative design approach involving stakeholders with diverse experiences was delivered. Drawing on research conducted with prisoners, officers, and external stakeholders, the project addressed complex issues related to furniture use in prisons. The project aimed to enhance existing furniture while introducing new, sustainable designs to the current selection. We hope that these new concepts and designs have potential to be manufactured inside the prison

    Did your child get disturbed by an inappropriate advertisement on YouTube?

    YouTube is a popular video platform for sharing creative content and ideas, targeting different demographics. Adults, older children, and young children are all avid viewers of YouTube videos. Meanwhile, countless young-kid-oriented channels have produced numerous instructional and age appropriate videos for young children. However, inappropriate content for young children, such as violent or sexually suggestive content, still exists. And children lack the ability to decide whether a video is appropriate for them or not, which then causes a huge risk to children's mental health. Prior works have focused on identifying YouTube videos that are inappropriate for children. However, these works ignore that not only the actual video content influences children, but also the advertisements that are shown with those videos. In this paper, we quantify the influence of inappropriate advertisements on YouTube videos that are appropriate for young children to watch. We analyze the advertising patterns of 24.6 K diverse YouTube videos appropriate for young children. We find that 9.9% of the 4.6 K unique advertisements shown on these 24.6 K videos contain inappropriate content for young children. Moreover, we observe that 26.9% of all the 24.6 K appropriate videos include at least one ad that is inappropriate for young children.     High-fidelity dimer excitations using quantum hardware

    Many-body entangled quantum spin systems exhibit emergent phenomena such as topological quantum spin liquids with distinct excitation spectra accessed in inelastic neutron scattering (INS) experiments. Here we simulate the dynamics of a quantum spin dimer, the basic quantum unit of emergent many-body spin systems. While canonical Trotterization methods require deep circuits precluding long time-scale simulations, we demonstrate 'direct' Resource-Efficient Fast-forwarding (REFF) measurements with short-depth circuits that can be used to capture longer time dynamics on quantum hardware. The temporal evolution of the 2-spin correlation coefficients enabled the calculation of the dynamical structure factor S(Q,ω)S(\mathbf{Q},\omega) - the key component of the neutron scattering cross-section. We simulate the triplet gap and the triplet splitting of the quantum dimer with sufficient fidelity to compare to experimental neutron data. Our results on current circuit hardware pave an important avenue to benchmark, or even predict, the outputs of the costly INS experiments.Comment: 24 pages, 3 tables, 16 figures, main text and supplementary material

    Surface reconstruction of ancient water storage systems an approach for sparse 3D sonar scans and fused stereo images

    This work presents a process pipeline that addresses the problem of reconstructing surfaces of underwater structures from stereo images and sonar scans collected with a micro-ROV on the islands of Malta and Gozo. Using a limited sensor load, sonar and small GoPro Hero2 cameras, the micro-ROV is able to explore water systems and gather data. As a preprocess to the reconstruction pipeline, a 3D evidence grid is created by mosaicing horizontal and vertical sonar scans. A volumetric representation is then constructed using a level set method. Fine-scale details from the scene are captured in stereo cameras, and are transformed into point clouds and projected into the volume. A raycasting technique is used to trim the volume in accordance with the projected point clouds, thus reintroducing fine details to the rough sonar-generated model. The resulting volume is surfaced, yielding a final mesh which can be viewed and interacted with for archaeological and educational purposes. Initial results from both steps of the reconstruction pipeline are presented and discussed.peer-reviewe

    Coordinating Development of the SWARM-EX CubeSat Swarm Across Multiple Institutions

    The Space Weather Atmospheric Reconfigurable Multiscale Experiment (SWARM-EX) is a National Science Foundation (NSF) sponsored CubeSat mission distributed across six colleges and universities in the United States. The project has three primary goals: (1) contributing to aeronomy and space weather knowledge, (2) demonstrating novel engineering technology, and (3) advancing higher education. The scientific focus of SWARM-EX is to study the spatial and temporal variability of ion-neutral interactions in the equatorial Ionosphere-Thermosphere (I-T) region. Since the mission consists of three spacecraft operating in a swarm, SWARM-EX will take in-situ measurements of the neutral and ion composition on timescales of less than an orbital period to study the persistence and correlation between different phenomena in the I-T region. The engineering objectives of SWARM-EX are focused on advancing the state of the art in spacecraft formation flying. In addition to being the first passively safe, autonomous formation of more than two spacecraft, SWARM-EX will demonstrate several other key innovations. These include a novel hybrid propulsive/differential drag control scheme and the realization of a distributed aeronomy sensor. Asa project selected by the NSF for its broader impacts as well as its intellectual merit, SWARM-EX aims to use CubeSat development as a vehicle for education. The six collaborating institutions have varying levels of CubeSat experience and involve students who range from first-year undergraduates to Ph.D. candidates. These differences in knowledge, as well as the distributed nature of the program, present a tremendous educational opportunity, but also raise challenges such as cross-institutional communication and coordination, document sharing and file management, and hardware development. By detailing its procedures for overcoming these challenges, the SWARM-EX team believes that it may serve as a case study for the coordination of a successful CubeSat program distributed across multiple institutions

    Mapping and visualizing ancient water storage systems with an ROV - an approach based on fusing stationary scans within a particle filter

    This paper presents a new method for construct- ing 2D maps of enclosed underwater structures using an underwater robot equipped with only a 2D scanning sonar, compass and depth sensor. In particular, no motion model or odometry is used. To accomplish this, a two step offline SLAM method is applied to a set of stationary sonar scans. In the first step, the change in position of the robot between each consecutive pair of stationary sonar scans is estimated using a particle filter. This set of pair wise relative scan positions is used to create an estimate of each scan’s position within a global coordinate frame using a weighted least squares fit that optimizes consistency between the relative positions of the entire set of scans. In the second step of the method, scans and their estimated positions act as inputs to a mapping algorithm that constructs 2D octree-based evidence grid maps of the site. This work is motivated by a multi-year archeological project that aims to construct maps of ancient water storage systems, i.e. cisterns, on the islands of Malta and Gozo. Cisterns, wells, and water galleries within fortresses, churches and homes oper- ated as water storage systems as far back as 2000 B.C. Using a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) these water storage systems located around the islands were explored while collecting video, still images, sonar, depth, and compass measurements. Data gathered from 3 different expeditions has produced maps of over 60 sites. Presented are results from applying the new mapping method to both a swimming pool of known size and to several of the previously unexplored water storage systems.peer-reviewe
